Tournament update for Drinker's Tavern - win a SoCo and Lime Chiller machine!

In addition to the gift cards, T-shirts and other premiums I give away every week for the teams with the highest weekly scores at Drinker's, the team with the most points in this six-week tourney cycle will win a SoCo and Lime Chiller of the sort pictured at left.  These sell for $300 or more new.

Three weeks ago Dons Quizzote won their second straight tournment, and an Amstel Light golf bag.

Another heavy turnout at Drinker's Tavern, and for the second week in a row an undermanned Dons Quizzote team finished second to a group of visiting players who can't return to compete for the tournament championship, four weeks from completion in this cycle. These guys did however spend their $25 gift card on more 40s than I've seen anyone drink in a long time... proof, as they said, that sometimes you can get hammered and still be the sharpest people in the room...

I'm going to try and catch up with the postings of winners I've neglected over the past month soon. In the meantime...

Low scores, high turnout at Drinker's Tavern - you're still in the running to win the next tourney!

A vacationing couple of Mancunians won the first week of the tourney cycle at Drinker's this past week, but left the city for Boston on Friday. This means that they have the lead in this six-week cumulative points tournament cycle (grand prize: a leather golf bag plus a variety of trivia-related games and books supplied by yours truly), but that does them precious little good.

And, yes, I asked and they are Man United and not Man City supporters, I'm not just playing to stereotype with the graphic. I forgot to take a photo, which is a shame as that would have made nice bragging rights back home.

Turnout was unusually high but scores were low; you can discount the 72 points and 62 points is easily caught up with over a five-week period. Heck, some of you beat people by that much every week... Of course the gift cards, T-shirts etc. are available every week. Last tourney cycle's champs Dons Quizzote, represented with only one member this past week, are effectively in the lead with 62 measly points. It's anyone's golf bag after one week.

KSoFM wins at Drinker's, expands tournament lead by 15 points; next week is our first Big Prize giveaway!

King Shit of Fuck Mountain now has a 75 point lead after 5 of 6 weeks in tournament play. Note that anyone who walks in any week is eligible that night for the $25 gift card, drink specials and a number of other prizes; cumulative points are totaled in six-week cycles.

This coming Tuesday we give away the limited edition PBR bicycle and a number of trivia-related prizes I've acquired for this purpose. It was good to see people out for the quiz up against election returns, playoff hockey and a Phillies game. Folks had every reason in the world to be doing something else and Drinker's and I appreciate your patronage. Joke of the night: McCain for President will also finish third in November. Those guys did get a First Amendment question wrong in the first round; coincidence..?

KSoFM has a "magic number" of 138 to clinch the tourney, a score possibly attainable in the fifth round if you kick serious butt in the first four.

KSoFM wins their second quiz of the week, takes the lead in the Drinker's tournament

KSoFM kicked some butt this week, including an impressive 9 of 10 in the final round. These kids are for real. Two teams in the running texted the bartender to let us know they couldn't make it this week; that might be enough to take them out of the running for the bike and other prizes in this round of tournament play. With two weeks remaining, it's completely possible for The Docs to make up 30 points/quiz on average and win.

There was also a large, loud group from Atlanta who kinda played a round until it was announced that "we're too lazy to write shit down." Is that city still burning? If not, why?

The Docs win by one point at Drinker's, take overall lead in cumulative points for the April prize

Drinker's staff-based team The Docs won by the slightest margin last night, and opened up a bigger lead over King Shit (reigning Lyon's Den champs) in the ongoing race for the limited edition PBR bike, which a number of people really want. I have to admit it is very cool.

That's My Bike!!! missed the first three rounds and still almost came in third; a few more performances like that, and the name becomes true.

The bike is mounted on the wall at Drinker's, and will be given to the team with the most points accumulated by and including the final week in April. It's still quite possible for a team to start playing now and finish first. I plan to supplement that prize with some trivia goodies of the book and game variety.

Teams did so-so with the baseball round. I gave away a copy of the somewhat moot book Curse of the Bambino to the team that scored highest in that Subject round. Drinker's also continues to provide me with many high-quality prizes to give out, and pretty much everyone in the room is walking out with something cool, including a number of high-quality shirts and hats, Drinker's logo and otherwise. Right now there are a large number of female tops in my bag of goodies, so you ladies should come out next week and expand your summer wardrobe in a way that says "I am fond of alcohol!"

Just to simplify things, I'm going to drop teams from this list if they miss a few weeks and become mathematically eliminated from the tourney, although of course everyone is eligible for the weekly $25 tab and other prizes. Tiger was visiting from Virginia and won't be playing again, so you can discount them.

Tiger wins the inaugural Drinker's Tavern quiz; cumulative points tallying for the Big Prize begins

Northern Virginians Tiger squeaked out a win in the first official Drinker's Tavern quiz. I was supposed to be posting a photo of them holding a sign that read FUCK U A.B., as A.B. is their boss, and they do not like their boss. Not one little bit. For some reason that photo did not register on my camera. There's no audio here, but trust me, these guys are telling A.B. what he can go do.

Turn-out was good, the crowd was fun and I have to say that Drinker's gave me a lot of prizes to give out. Lots of people went home with a shirt, a decent hat (none of this trucker/mesh nonsense) or various other trinkets, and I gave away a CD on top of that.

What's going to happen from now on is that I'll list the weekly winner (top prize every week is a $25 gift card to Drinker's) followed by a running total of cumulative points until the Big Prize is distributed, which is to say the new limited edition Pabst Blue Ribbon bike plus other cool stuff I'll figure out later. I know you guys; I'm a trivia geek too. I know what you crave. The team with the most cumulative points will be awarded the first Big Prize the Tuesday of the last week of April, including totals from that contest. I've been informed of the next Big Prize lined up after that, and, trust me, it's pretty damn cool.
